The Holistic Guide to Self-Care When You're Sick: Lessons from a Busy Life

In the whirlwind of our fast-paced lives, we often find ourselves running on full throttle, tackling work, family, and endless to-do lists. But what happens when illness, like an uninvited guest, forces us to slam on the brakes and prioritize self-care? As I recently discovered during a hectic period of apartment hunting, planning a move and the holidays, sometimes life throws a curveball. In my case, that curveball was COVID-19.

I began to notice signs of fatigue and experienced episodes of brain fog. Rather than persistently pushing myself to complete tasks on my lengthy to-do list, I made the decision to reschedule work appointments and reluctantly canceled social lunches I had scheduled. Recognizing the importance of tuning into my body's signals, I acknowledged that it was time to heed its wisdom. While I couldn't engage in the activities I had initially planned, this pause allowed my body to receive the essential rest it was craving. The investment in self-care paid dividends as I gradually regained my vitality and clarity of mind.

In this blog, we'll explore the world of holistic self-care for when you're under the weather, drawing from my personal experience and lessons learned while navigating the unexpected detour of illness amidst a busy schedule.

1. Acceptance and Mindfulness:

The first step in holistic self-care is acknowledging your condition and embracing mindfulness. When I tested positive for COVID, my initial reaction was frustration. With so much to do, I couldn't afford to get sick! However, resisting the reality of illness only added to my stress. Practicing mindfulness and accepting my situation allowed me to let go of resistance and focus on my recovery.

2. Rest and Sleep:

Amidst my hectic life, quality rest and sleep had often taken a back seat. Illness changed that perspective. Adequate sleep is crucial for healing. I dedicated time to napping, sleeping longer at night, and creating a comfortable sleep environment. It was incredible how restorative sleep aided my recovery and boosted my energy levels.

3. Proper Nutrition:

Nourishing your body is paramount when you're unwell. I made an effort to consume immune-boosting foods like fruits, vegetables, and herbal teas. Avoiding processed foods and sugary snacks helped maintain my energy levels and strengthen my immune system.  I lost my ability to taste and smell so I found myself drinking my veggies in smoothie form and eating eggs which are high in protein and healthy fats.

4. Hydration:

Staying hydrated is often underestimated. Water flushes toxins from the body and keeps your immune system functioning optimally. I kept a water bottle close, reminding myself to sip throughout the day. Herbal teas and broths also contributed to my hydration regimen.  The warm water soothed my throat.

5. Gentle Exercise and Movement:

Physical activity doesn't have to halt completely when you're sick. Gentle exercises like stretching or short walks can improve circulation, reduce stiffness, and boost your mood. I integrated light movement into my daily routine, which made a significant difference in my overall well-being.  My dog, Manny, needed his daily exercise, so we went on slow and short walks.

6. Meditation and Relaxation Techniques:

Meditation and deep-breathing exercises can alleviate stress and promote healing. I started each day with a brief meditation session, helping me maintain a calm and centered mindset during recovery.

7. Seek Support:

Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or a healthcare provider for support. My loved ones provided emotional support and practical assistance during my illness, reminding me that I wasn't alone.

While getting sick is never part of our plan, it can be a powerful teacher. My experience with COVID-19 forced me to slow down, reevaluate my priorities, and embrace holistic self-care. Now, I understand that taking time to care for oneself, especially when unwell, is not a sign of weakness but an essential aspect of overall well-being. The next time life throws you a curveball, remember the holistic self-care lessons shared here, and take the time you need to heal, recover, and ultimately thrive
